To be honest, I was bored with Blindness. I never thought that a movie by Fernando Meirelles could be unexciting. I don’t think the cast, which includes Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Danny Glover, and Gael Garcia Bernal, has anything to do with it being dull. They did well for the material they were given. But there was something missing with the film’s final cut.

I can’t really pinpoint the culprit as to what made Blindness uninteresting. It is based on a book wrote by Novel Prize winner Jose Saramago so it supposed to be deep and the story does have substance. I enjoy movies that make you think but I don’t know what went wrong with this one.

Blindness is supposed to be the metaphor for man’s moral blindness, or the capacity to be indifferent with each other. Cue in prejudice, violence, and selfishness. This is the reason why a person in the movie suddenly became blind. It also portrayed that sickness can spread among us. The Doctor’s Wife (Julianne Moore) was immune to the blindness because of her sincere empathy towards others. This is the opposite of the Doctor (Mark Ruffalo) who is just thinking about himself.

Maybe it’s the numerous plot holes found in Blindness that made it uninteresting. For instance, the quarantine facility was supposedly secured right? And yet the Bartender (Gael Garcia Bernal) managed to slip in a gun with unlimited bullets. I also didn’t like the way some scenes were blurred out to let the viewers see through the eyes of someone suffering from the white blindness. Once is enough already.

Doctor’s Wife (Julianne Moore): The only thing more terrifying than blindness is being the only one who can see.

Blindness tackles the issue of human morality and I got it. What I can’t still figure out is to why the movie turned out the way it is. It was frustrating and I just can’t sympathize with any of the characters. Maybe I’m blinded myself that’s why I can’t see it. One thing I learned from the movie is that Blindness is the solution to the traffic problems we’re facing each day.
