Ghastly is the most recent creepy kid horror movie from South Korea. It is about Bin (Lee Hyung Suk), a boy who witnessed the brutal death of his parents. The reason behind their murders is still unknown at the beginning of the movie. His uncle Jang Hwan (Park Sung Min), takes him in and now lives with him along with his wife Sunny (Han Eun Jung) and her wife’s sister Yoo Rin (Hyomin).

Ghastly suffers from the lack of originality of the story. None of the scenes are scary at all. You can predict what will happen next. It features a lot of formulaic moments already done in past horror movies.

One of the things I like about Ghastly is Han Eun Jung. Her performance is convincing enough to convey that something terrifying is happening around her. It’s a bonus that she’s easy to the eyes. The audience knows that the boy is evil but Sunny is clueless about it. This is a bit frustrating and there are times that you would want to knock some sense into her.

Hyomin of T-ara plays Sunny’s little sister. I don’t have any problems with Hyomin because I’m a T-ara fan. I do have some issues with her character. Yoo Rin appears to be a spoiled brat who competes for her sister’s attention. Her sister is experiencing some financial problems and yet you see her partying in a club with her T-ara friends. To be honest, I expected her to be the first one to die.

Overall, Ghastly is a bad horror movie. There really is no reason to watch it except if you’re an Asian horror lover or a rabid T-ara fan.

Park Min Young stars in The Cat as So Yeon, a claustrophobic pet groomer. She experiences a series of supernatural events involving her new feline friend.

Park Min Young stars in The Cat as So Yeon, a claustrophobic pet groomer. Then one day a white cat comes in for grooming. Then the next day the cat’s owner is found dead. She also sees an apparition of a young girl but her therapist says that it is connected with her phobia. This is the start of a series of supernatural events involving the cat and the scary apparition.

As you might have guessed, The Cat features a scary cat. Instead of a black one, they opt to use a white cat. The movie combines feline shocks with traditional Asian horror motifs, such as a child ghost with black eyes. The ghost provides a lot of jump scares.

Aside from the addition of the cat as a plot device, The Cat doesn’t bring something new to the table. I have already seen it done before. It’s a usual mystery regarding a ghost with unfinished business and the body must be found in order to exorcise it.

But The Cat has Park Min Young in it and she makes it more interesting, well for me at least. She’s much cuter than the cat, which might have been the reason why during one of the events the cat tried to rip off her dress. Or maybe the cat’s a guy who wants to take a look at her puppies.

If you’re someone who hasn’t seen a lot of Asian horror movies, then prepare to be traumatized by The Cat. You will not look at a cat the same way again. But if you have seen the likes of the Grudge then you might find the movie weak and predictable. As for me, Min Young made watching the movie worthwhile.

T-ara’s Ham Eun Jung headlines White: The Melody of the Curse, which is a horror revenge movie.

T-ara’s Ham Eun Jung headlines White: The Melody of the Curse, which is a horror revenge movie. She’s not out of her element as she plays a girl group member in the movie. Her group Pink Dolls made a remake of White, which was a song written by an unknown composer.

White made the group famous but strange things began occurring. Mysterious incidents happened to the one chosen as the lead vocalist of the group until only Eun Ju (Eun Jung) was the only healthy one. She tried her best to solve the mystery and get rid of the Melody of the Curse.

The other members of Pink Dolls are Maydoni as Sin Ji, Choi Ah Ra as Arang, and Jin Se Yeon as Jenny. White: The Melody of the Curse is the first time I saw any of them. Eun Jung clearly is the star of the show and the other girls were simply fillers whenever she’s not part of the scene.

Pink Dolls is not the only girl group featured in White: The Melody of the Curse. Some members of After School were in the movie as the group Pure. They were seen in the first part of the movie performing to After School’s Bang.

People might dismiss White: The Melody of the Curse as another Asian horror movie with a scary, long-haired ghost crawling out of nowhere. It has a Sadako wannabe as its main terror but it managed to stay unpredictable until the end. I didn’t imagine that Eun Ju would die because I really thought that she has broken the curse.

Well it is not that scary but it managed to incorporate ideas to make it entertaining and fresh. It showed the reality of a K-Pop group struggling to make it big in the scene. I find it weird for the movie to feature a commentary on how some idols reach the top when its main star came from one of Korea’s top idol group.

White: The Melody of the Curse is more of a mystery than a horror movie. I was not scared out of my wits by it but it managed to make me guess as to who or what is causing the problems. This is a must-see for Eun Jung fans.

Oneechanbara: The Movie – Vortex is a movie that features a girl in just her underwear and a cowboy hat, draped with feather boa, and katanas as weapons.

Let’s face it. Oneechanbara: The Movie – Vortex caters to a specific target market. It is a movie that features a girl in just her underwear and a cowboy hat, draped with feather boa, and katanas as weapons in fighting zombies. And she has all the right assets to keep guys glued to the screen.

This genre is an acquired taste that one develops during his puberty stage. Some outgrow it while there are others like me who still enjoy watching this type of movie. It has zombies, sword fighting, blood and gore. What more can you ask for? Oh, did I mention that it has pretty girls as well?

Oneechanbara: The Movie – Vortex is a sequel. Well, I haven’t seen the first one yet but I read that the storylines of both movies are unrelated with each other and although the main characters are the same, the actresses that played them are different.

It is about Aya (Yu Tejima), a skillful swordswoman who has cursed blood of Imichi flowing through her veins. She roams the streets and fight zombies with the help of her sister Saki (Kumi Imura). The evil Himiko (Rika Kawamura) wants their blood so that she could remain young forever. Another eye candy in the movie is Aya’s old friend Reiko (Akina Ozawa), who is an expert with the long rifle.

Don’t expect the fight scenes of this movie to be innovative and fresh. But it is good enough to satisfy my craving for some action. And if you’re still wondering, the answer is no. It doesn’t have any full nudity of any sort nor does it have any sexual or perverse acts. It’s a plain old action flick with zombies, blood, and babes.

If you’re looking for mindless fun then check out Oneechanbara: The Movie – Vortex. The story might be sketchy but who gives a damn about the plot when you got hot chicks wielding swords on the screen fighting zombies. That’s good enough for me.

In Case 39, Renee Zellweger plays a dedicated social worker Emily Jenkins and one of her cases is that of Lilith Sullivan (Jodelle Ferland). Her initial investigation shows that the kid is physically abused by her parents Edward (Callum Keith Rennie) and Margaret (Kerry O’Malley).

Emily feels that Lilith is in imminent danger, which is why she drags Detective Mike Barron (Ian McShane) to check out the Sullivan house. There they find the couple in the process of burning Lilith inside the oven. Lilith is then sent to child care but she asks Emily to adopt her. Emily agrees and the girl moves in with her. But as Case 39 progresses, she finds out that Lilith is not as angelic as she seems to be.

Renee Zellweger did a decent job in Case 39 but Jodelle Ferland stole the show from her. You can immediately feel that something’s wrong with her right from the start. She makes you feel sorry for her at the beginning as the movie slowly prepares the viewers for a suspenseful ride.

Edward Sullivan (Callum Keith Rennie): They say when you’re born you’re given your eternal soul. The part of you that lives on, lives again. Whatever evil she is, didn’t come from us. It was already there. From the moment she came into being, she brought something with her. Something older, destructive. Soul of a demon.

Case 39 is a decent horror movie but if you really want a good scare, I suggest you watch Orphan instead. Case 39 is too predictable for me and I hate its Hollywood ending. One thing’s for sure, you’ll think twice about adopting a kid after watching Case 39.

Sorority Row is a teen slasher flick and nothing more. Don’t expect it to have an elaborate plot or a surprising twist. You just need to enjoy the movie and have fun guessing who the murderer is. The girls of Sorority Row are Jessica (Leah Pipes), Claire (Jamie Chung), Ellie (Rumer Willis), Cassidy (Briana Evigan) and Chugs (Margo Harshman).

The girls pulled a harmless prank that turned deadly. Megan (Audrina Patridge) tricked her boyfriend Garrett (Matt O’Leary) by faking an overdose. Her sorority sisters told Garrett to dump her in a lake. Megan can’t keep still and moved just when Garret was dragging her to the spot. He panicked and poked Megan’s chest with a tire iron, which killed her.

The girls of Sorority Row didn’t report it to the police and swore never to speak about it again. But during their graduation party eight months later, the sorority girls received a message that reminded them of the past.

Chugs (Margo Harshman): Ellie, I love you because you’re always there to help with homework. You’re like a spellcheck with a nice rack.

Sorority Row is full of eye candies for me – Briana Evigan of Step Up 2, Margo Harshman of Keith, Jamie Chung of Dragonball: Evolution, and the lovely Audrina Patridge of The Hills. Too bad Briana doesn’t know how to pick a boyfriend in the movie, who turned out to be the killer. The characters were paper-thin but their performances were adequate to keep the viewers glued to the screen. Daddy Bruce would be proud of Rumer Willis’ character, who managed to save the day for everyone ala John McClane in Die Hard.

If you love slasher movies, then go watch Sorority Row. I grew up watching 80’s slasher flicks and this movie didn’t disappoint me. It’s not the best but it’s fun. You should give it a try.

I was disappointed with Death Bell 2 or Gosa 2. The first Death Bell was a good horror movie.

I was disappointed with Death Bell 2 or Gosa 2. The first Death Bell was a good horror movie. It was about a bunch of students who are killed by a mysterious entity. Now we have Death Bell 2, a sequel but I don’t really know how it deserves to be called one.

The events that led to the killing in this sequel have nothing to do with the events of the first Death Bell. It is an entirely new movie with nothing to link it to the original movie; maybe that the two movies took placed in a high school campus.

Death Bell 2 is just like the first one with different cast members. Now we have Kim Soo Ro as one of the teachers. He’s just like his character in My Teacher E.T., which I enjoyed. I can’t say the same thing with this movie.

And just like in the first Death Bell where they casted Nam Gyu Ri to play the lead role, in the sequel another idol plays the lead in the person of Jiyeon of T-ara as Se-hee. I don’t have anything against her but her portrayal was uninteresting and almost cured my insomnia. Almost.

Another similarity between the two Death Bell movies is that they both had revenge and supernatural beings. In Death Bell 2, Tae Yeon (Yoon Seung Ah) was killed a few years before and her boyfriend Jung Bum (Son Ho Joon) took the rap for it.

While in prison, his mother died. Because of this, Jung Bum planned to get his revenge on the real culprits of Tae Yeon’s murder. He was helped by his sister who is now a teacher in the school. I thought that I was watching a Korean Saw because of the methods used in killing the students.

The director and writer wanted to be smart and showed an open ending just as when the end credits were rolling. We see Jung Bum was trying to resuscitate Tae Yeon but an unknown entity came from the pool and killed her.

If you saw Death Bell 1 or Gosa then you’ll be as disappointed as me with this sequel. Death Bell 2 Bloody Camp tried to ride on the success of the original Gosa but failed to bring something new to the table. Be very afraid about this movie. Watching it can result to your death due to boredom.

I watched One Missed Call Final or Chakushin Ari Final without any knowledge that it is the third and final installation of the series.

I watched One Missed Call Final or Chakushin Ari Final without any knowledge that it is the third and final installation of the series. Maybe I should have watched the first two movies first to be familiar with the mythos behind the movie.

In One Missed Call Final, Emiri (Meisa Kuroki) is a shy high school girl bullied by her classmates. Asuka (Maki Horikita) stood up for her and became the target of the bullying. Instead of being in Asuka’s side, Emiri avoided her so that she wouldn’t be bullied again. Asuka tried to commit suicide but was saved by the school janitor. After that, Asuka remains in a coma.

The class goes to a field trip to Korea and strange things start to happen. Just like in any other horror movie, the pretty one dies first and in this case it was Azusa, played by Miho Amakawa. One by one, the students met their grisly death.

One Missed Call Final felt like a Final Destination movie except the deaths are caused by a vengeful spirit. Pam, or such I say Asuka’s alter-ego, is the one sending the cursed photos to her classmates’ mobile phones. It is a good premise for a horror movie but it got confusing when they tried to tie things up in the end.

Suddenly One Missed Call Final turned into Train Man as Emiri and An Jinu (Jang Geun Suk) asked netizens to send Asuka words of encouragement. I don’t get how a spiritual alter-ego can be connected to the computer and flooding her inbox can help solve the problem.

Like Emiri in the end, I was dazed and confused by the turn of events in One Missed Call Final. It tried too hard to have a clever twist to the story but it didn’t happen. Plus it failed to scare me at all. Maki Horikita made me stay until the end of the movie but I was not entertained by it. If not for Maki, I’ll say it was a waste of time.

In Jennifer’s Body, Megan Fox plays an evil high school girl who eats boys after seducing them.

In Jennifer’s Body, Megan Fox plays an evil high school girl who eats boys after seducing them. Most guys (me included) would be curious enough to watch this movie with that premise alone. I didn’t expect much from it except being a vehicle to showcase Megan’s body.

And I was right. Jennifer’s Body tried to be a funny horror movie but ended up trying too hard at both ends of the poles. It was neither scary nor funny. It tried to be clever but failed miserably. There’s nothing underneath the covers.

I wonder who sacrificed a virgin to think that a movie such as Jennifer’s Body can be entertaining as long as Megan Fox is in it. Maybe teenage boys will enjoy a naked Fox swimming in a lake and forget about everything else but not me. I feel bad for Amanda Seyfried who I think did a good job even though the script was bad.

Jennifer Check (Megan Fox): I am scrumptious!

Don’t try to look for substance in Jennifer’s Body. It’s all about Megan Fox and nothing else. Fans are gifted with a short lesbian scene but don’t get too excited by it. Like anything else in the movie, it is a let-down.

I loved Diablo Cody’s Juno and I expected Jennifer’s Body to be just as good but it turned out to be a big disappointment. Megan Fox has a hot body and that’s all you get to see in this movie. Her acting is mediocre and Amanda Seyfried couldn’t save it from being a disaster.

Sam Raimi pulled a fast one on us. Drag Me to Hell was marketed as a Horror movie but I was laughing so hard while watching the movie. It reminded me of Raimi’s early work, Evil Dead II. Maybe that’s the kind of atmosphere he was aiming for Drag Me to Hell.

Drag Me to Hell is about Christine (Alison Lohman), a bank loan officer who had a confrontation with an old woman (Lorna Raver) while at work. The old woman, Sylvia, was about to be evicted from her house and was asking for a mortgage extension. Christine denied her request and Sylvia told her that in three days she’s going to hell.

That’s basically the storyline of the movie. Just add Justin Long as Christine’s boyfriend (Clay) who tried to understand what Christine was going through. But no matter what they do to try to take the curse off her, in the end she would still be dragged down to hell.

Without the humor, this movie will drag its audience to hell. You know a scary sequence is coming when suddenly there’s a quiet moment. This leads to a sudden loud noise that Raimi hopes would make the audience jump up from their seats. Drag Me to Hell failed to give me goosebumps.

Christine Brown (Alison Lohman): I beat you, you old bitch!

The surprising twist in the end was not surprising at all. I don’t think this is a spoiler because if you watch Drag Me to Hell, you’ll get the feeling that Christine placed the wrong envelope at Sylvia’s body. Clay found the envelope with the right talisman and sent it back to Christine. Thus she was dragged to hell.

If you’re looking for a good horror movie to scare the wits out of you, then avoid Drag Me to Hell. But if you’re looking for a funny one then do watch this movie.
