Paul Rudd is the perfect choice for Our Idiot Brother. He plays Ned, a stoner that’s too naïve with the ways of the world. He is too trusting and childish. At the beginning of the movie, he is arrested and sentenced to eight months in jail.

The other stars of Our Idiot Brother are Ned’s sisters. Elizabeth Banks plays Miranda, who works for Vanity Fair. Then there’s Zooey Deschanel playing Natalie, a lesbian standup comedian who lives with her lawyer girlfriend (Rashida Jones). Lastly, there’s Emily Mortimer, as Liz, the only married one amongst them.

Each of the sisters has her own issues and it doesn’t help them when Ned barges into their houses after he is released from prison. He’s clueless that he is causing much trouble already that it’s not a surprise that his longest relationship is with his dog Willie Nelson.

Aside from the sisters, Our Idiot Brother features a lot of eye candies including Janet Montgomery as Lady Arabella. Her character is vital to the story as it shows how Ned is used by his sister Miranda, who is assigned to interview Lady Arabella. Ned becomes close with the lady and she opens up about her relationship. This is the information that Miranda needs for her article and she tricks her idiot brother into spilling it out to her.

Ned (Paul Rudd): I like to think that if you put your trust out there; if you really give people the benefit of the doubt, see their best intentions, people will rise to the occasion.

Our Idiot Brother shows that people’s perception of stupidity can subjective. Ned’s honesty is misinterpreted as immaturity. He maintains as integrity when her sisters’ wavered. He is seen as the source of the problem when in reality, he is the solution.

Our Idiot Brother succeeds in delivering a funny story and at the same time keeps the audience engaged. In the end, everyone likes Ned and so would you.

The combination of Paul Rudd and Seann William Scott resulted into a fun and entertaining movie. In Role Models, Rudd and Scott play Danny and Wheeler. They are two energy drink spokespersons who got into trouble after Danny’s break up with his girlfriend (Elizabeth Banks). It’s either jail or community service for them. They picked the latter.

Community service means spending some time with troubled kids. Danny is teamed up with Augie (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), someone who likes role-playing games and seems lost in Middle Earth. Wheeler gets the foul-mouthed Ronnie (Boob’e J. Thompson).

The Role Models and the kids interacted well with each other. Scott is stereotyped as Stifler and Mintz-Plasse as McLovin’ but it worked just right for this movie. It is important for the stars to have good chemistry and this is the case for Role Models. The plot might not be original but a comedy is judged by the laughs it generates and Role Models delivered a lot of laughs.

Danny (Paul Rudd): No, venti is twenty. Large is large. In fact, tall is large and grande is Spanish for large. Venti is the only one that doesn’t mean large. It’s also the only one that’s Italian. Congratulations, you’re stupid in three languages.

Instead of them influencing the kids, the Role Models Danny and Wheeler ended up playing a role-playing game with Augie dressed as KISS. The movie’s message is to do what you enjoy doing, no matter what everyone else is saying. If it means donning a cape all the time then do it.

Role Models is a good comedy. After experiencing the devastation of Typhoon Ondoy and Pepeng, Role Models made me smile and rediscover humor again. After the lows of the day, do yourself a favor and watch this movie.

The Uninvited is the Hollywood remake of the Korean horror movie A Tale of Two Sisters. The original was scary but the remake was so weak that those with heart disorders can safely watch it without the fear of a heart attack. It is more of a mystery thriller than a horror movie.

Unlike other Asian horror remakes, The Uninvited is completely westernized. The movie takes place in a small American town with Emily Browning (Anna) and Arielle Kebbel (Alex) as the two sisters. The story was slightly tweaked to incorporate the changes in the setting. Elizabeth Banks plays their stepmom.

Rachael (Elizabeth Banks): You know Anna, I don’t think this is going to work out.

I like the changes they did with The Uninvited. As a horror remake, it failed. But as a mystery thriller, it is good but not quite great. Yup, Anna accidentally killed her mom and her sister that sent her to the loony bin. When she was supposed to have recovered from it and returned home, she still sees the already dead Alex hanging around the house. Then she killed her stepmom and in the end she goes back to the mental institute.

If you’re expecting to be scared out of your wits, then watch the original A Tale of Two Sisters. But if you want to enjoy a thriller with slight unpredictable plot twists, then watch The Uninvited. If you’re a fan of the original, watch it with an open mind or else you’re up for some major disappointment.

Kevin Smith really knows how to get into the nerves of the conservatives. In his latest movie, Zack and Miri Make a Porno, which was released October of 2008, he managed to put in frontal nudity (both the male and female type), shit jokes, racial slurs, and a lot more in its 102 minutes of running time.

It’s about best friends Zack (Seth Rogen) and Miri (Elizabeth Banks) who had to resort to making a skin flick in order to pay their bills. They then casted a bunch of amateurs for their film, among them Lester played by Jason Mewes.

If you’re a fan of Smith’s movies like me, then you’ll love every minute of it. It’s like Dogma meets Clerks with Silent Bob not making a cameo. Though there are still some noteworthy cameos in the film such as Brandon Routh, Justin Long, and adult film legend Traci Lords.

Zack Brown (Seth Rogen): I mean, you look beautiful – you always look… so beautiful, so I guess it’s not a big deal. But you… you look amazing.

This movie is not for kids and I would not let my nephews and nieces watch it until they’re 18. But if you’re a mature adult then Zack and Miri is for you. It’s a sweet romantic comedy disguised in a raunchy movie. And yeah, Elizabeth Banks looks amazing in the movie.

*Spoiler*
Well Zack and Miri didn’t complete their porno but they ended up together.

I passed on the recent Eddie Murphy movies because I find them not funny anymore. I was supposed to be working but my mind is on the major WoW patch (Echoes of Doom) and I can’t get any work done. So to distract myself from WoW for now, I watched Meet Dave. I’m glad I did just that.

The movie is about aliens in our planet with their ship disguised as a human Dave. It’s like Coming to America meets Pluto Nash but funnier. Well, anything’s funnier than Pluto Nash. The aliens are Lilliputian in size and controls Dave’s thought and actions. Through Dave’s interaction with Gina (Elizabeth Banks) and her son Josh (Austyn Myers), the aliens learned how to be human.

As the crew discovers various human emotions, it shows through Dave. Some people are like that in a way. It’s like they are controlled by diverse personalities within their body. Maybe there really are aliens living amongst us. Or maybe I’m just trying to divert my attention away from World of Warcraft for now.

But seriously, Eddie Murphy is back to the Eddie Murphy I used to laugh to. I grew up with the Beverly Hills Cop series and that’s the Eddie Murphy I want. Not the Eddie Murphy who wants to play every single character in a movie. Come to think of it, Murphy plays two roles in this movie but it’s not irritating as the Klumps.

Meet Dave succeeded in getting my mind off World of Warcraft for a while. It was enjoyable and well made. But then again, I’ll watch anything just to keep me from checking if my realm’s already up. BTW, Quel’Dorei’s green and I’m off to the barbershop.

And yes, I am Dave Ming Chang!
