The 2008 version of The Day the Earth Stood Still is all bark with no bite. The CGI effects are effective but that’s all it had. Character development is non-existent and the plot has more holes than a Swiss cheese.

Keanu Reeves is just right to play Klaatu because he already perfected the role of an emotionless humanoid. Jaden Smith and Jennifer Connelly did well for what was given to them. John Cleese and Kathy Bates are great thespians and it’s a shame to see their talents wasted in The Day the Earth Stood Still.

With World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War, Max Brooks compiled first-hand experiences and testimonies of survivors of the global zombie war. It’s like reading a history book except that the facts are fiction. You’ll read the stories of intelligence officials, smugglers, military personnel, doctors, and others who have fought the zombie horde. It’s a collection of short stories of how the human race managed to survive and win its deadliest battle to date.

World War Z is a zombie movie on a global scale. Imagine a world where the undead outnumbers the living and their numbers are increasing with every human killed. That’s the scenario the readers are immersed in when reading Brooks’ novel.

The title says it all. Sex Pot is about sex and pot. That means adolescent males will enjoy it. It’s a movie where one will download and will share with their friends behind their parents’ back. To be honest, I used to enjoy movies like Sex Pot but I have outgrown them. Not even the dozen hot topless girls can lure me back into the dark side.

I’m not surprised that Coraline is nominated for Best Animated Feature Film in this year’s Oscars. I’ve seen the other nominee Up and Coraline is definitely different from it. Up is a light adventure story while Coraline is a heavy horror movie.

Grownups should watch Coraline with the young ones because some kids might be disturbed from what they are about to see. It is based on a novel by Neil Gaiman, which has won the 2002 Bram Stoker Award for Best Work for Young Readers. Dakota Fanning lends her voice to the title role and Teri Hatcher as her mom.

Quentin Tarantino gives us an alternative ending to World War II via Inglourious Basterds. It has everything you’re looking for in a Tarantino film – violent, bloody, and funny. It had my full attention right from the opening sequence where Colonel Hans “Jew Hunter” Landa (Christoph Waltz) was interrogating the dairy farmer (Denis Menochet).

Lt. Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt) is the leader of the Basterds, which is a group of American soldiers whose goal is to kill Nazis within the occupied territory. Then there’s Shosanna (Melanie Laurent), a Jewish cinema owner who has witnessed her family being massacred by Landa’s group.

The Steam Experiment is about Jimmy (Val Kilmer), a deranged scientist who confesses to a newspaperman and later to Detective Mancini (Armand Assante) that he’s holding a group of people in a steam room to illustrate his theory on global warming. His only demand is to publish his theories.

There are lots of questions with regards to The Steam Experiment. Are the people trapped in the steam room still alive or dead? And is the whole scenario just made up or reality? What I do know is that this is one thriller that should be avoided at all costs.

The Education of Charlie Banks is Fred Durst’s directorial movie debut. Yup, you’ve read that right. Limp Bizkit’s front man came out with this movie in 2007 and if he didn’t tweet about it, I won’t even know it existed.

Don’t be misled by the title of the movie. The Education of Charlie Banks is not the education of Charlie Banks, played by Jesse Eisenberg. He’s already showing signs of maturity and intelligence right from the beginning of the film. It’s actually the education of Mick (Jason Ritter), Charlie’s childhood friend with a questionable character. Let’s just say that Mick would not be winning any Mr. Congeniality awards ever.
