Walgreens and Express Script failed to reach a new deal and it means that the former would not be part of the pharmacy provider network as of January 1, 2012. This has forced patients to use their in-network pharmacy benefits in other pharmacies elsewhere.
Patients who are covered by an Express Scripts plan now have to change their pharmacists, most of who have to go out of their way to fill their prescriptions. Members of Express Script used to go to Walgreens pharmacies because they provided convenience via open 24-hour service and drive-thru counters.
Customers are unhappy with the development. They say that the costs of their medications have not gone down and at the same time they experience additional stress whenever they have to replenish their prescriptions.
In its part, Walgreens now offers a Walgreens Prescription Savings Club. For a limited time only, consumers can save $15 on their membership fee. Individuals can join for $5 while a family has to pay $10 a year. The family membership covers all immediate family members and even pets. The offer is valid until January 31, 2012 so better act fast now.
Aside from discounts on purchases from Walgreens pharmacies, members can also receive discounts on flu shots, pet prescriptions, diabetic supplies, and nebulizers. Its pharmacies carry more than 8,000 brand-names and generic medications. Members also receive bonuses whenever they buy Walgreens brand products and photofinishing services.
