Someone requested for a review of Nine and a Half Weeks and here it is. I first saw the movie when I was in high school and all I can remember about it were two to three scenes. I had to watch it again but this time around without abusing the rewind and fast forward buttons.
Nine 1/2 Weeks is about Elizabeth (Kim Basinger), an assistant in an art gallery who was recently divorced from her three year marriage. She met the wealthy businessman John (Mickey Rourke) and her life was turned upside down for the next nine and a half weeks.
Elizabeth’s life started to revolve around John and can’t stop thinking about him when they’re apart. The young Kim Basinger was perfect for the role of a sex-starved woman. She projected the right emotions that were needed for the scenes. I also remembered why this was one of my favorite movies during my teenage years.
John (Mickey Rourke): You work and you work and you work. You meet with people you don’t like, that you don’t know, that you don’t even want to know. And you try to sell them things and they try to sell you things, you go home, you listen to the wife nag and the kids bitch. You turn off the T.V., you wake up the next day and you do it all over again. But I’ll tell you, the only thing that keeps me going is this chick. I’ve got this incredible chick on the side you see, and she is so hot, I can hardly believe it. She’s got one of those heart-shaped asses. Have you ever had a chick with a heart-shaped ass?
Mickey Rourke is an excellent actor but I just don’t like what he did with his present face, which made him look like Stallone’s twin. In Nine 1/2 Weeks, he was a manipulator who finds pleasure in making Elizabeth do things she wouldn’t normally do. He had the looks to make his role believable. In the end it was the one who was in it for love who was hurt the most.
Nine 1/2 Weeks is all about power and control. It does contain lots of sex and nudity, which was all my teenage self can remember about it. Actually the sex scenes were pretty tame and highlighted Kim Basinger’s natural assets. But it is far off from being porn. Every scene was tastefully done, even the back alley one.
You need to have a mature mind to really enjoy Nine 1/2 Weeks. You’ll be treated to an 80’s visual masterpiece. You need to watch between the scenes so to speak in order to get the full essence of the story. It was a good experience and it made me yearn for honey. I’m glad that I’ve watched this again.
