The Black Echo is the third Michael Connelly book review I wrote after doing the first two Mickey Haller novels – The Lincoln Lawyer and The Brass Verdict. It is the first book that features Hieronymus “Harry Bosch, a former celebrity detective of the LAPD but after he gained the ire of the internal affairs department, he was demoted to the low-key Beverly Hills district.
Before becoming a detective, Harry Bosch served in Vietnam as a tunnel rat. When a buddy from Vietnam is found dead in a drainpipe, Bosch was fortunately called to the crime scene and identified the body. Further investigation led to more murders, bank robberies, drugs, diamonds, and betrayals.
Michael Connelly is truly the master of complex schemes. A simple supposed drug overdose of a washed-up Nam veteran led to surprising twists. Plus Connelly described the autopsies, murder scenes, and procedures in a realistic manner that takes the readers right in the middle of the investigation.
In The Black Echo, Harry Bosch is teamed up with FBI Agent Eleanor Wish. They formed a beautiful professional and personal bond that you’ll wish their partnership would last forever. But Connelly got another plans for her as she provided a very surprising twist to the story. Hopefully we get to read about her in the other Harry Bosch novels.
Just like the first Michael Connelly book I’ve read, Black Echo is interesting from page one to the end. I had a hard time putting it down. This novel might be more than ten years old but it is still relevant and a good read.
