Future X-Cops was supposed to take place in the future but everything about it felt dated. I read somewhere that Andy Lau accepted the role after 19 rewrites. I wonder what he saw in this version because it’s still rubbish to me.
Andy Lau is Kidd, a cop from the future who had to go back to the past to protect an important person. Sounds like Terminator, doesn’t it? If you’re still interested with the movie then prepare for a bumpy joyride as the movie goes through one plot hole to the next.
I was excited to see Fan Bingbing as Andy Lau’s wife Millie in Future X-Cops but they had to kill her in the first part of the movie. My interest in the movie was dwindling rapidly after her death.
I don’t know how they got Barbie Hsu for this project. She is Miss Holly, a cop in the past and Kidd’s current or past love interest, whichever way you want to look at it. Their chemistry was nowhere to be found. In the end we see Kidd back in the future visiting old Miss Holly. It’s like a scene from The Notebook except one of them remained young. Or was it Somewhere in Time?
Also part of the movie is Xu Jiao, who plays Kidd’s daughter. This is her second movie, following her debut in Stephen Chow’s CJ7. Anyway at first I thought it was a bad idea for Kidd to bring his daughter to a mission in the past until we learn that she’s a robot.
Mike He plays a police sergeant in the past who became the stepfather of the future Doctor Masterson. Other than that his role is insignificant and served only as an eye candy for the female audiences.
Ok, so you might say that an Andy Lau movie doesn’t have to have a plausible plot as long as the action sequences are good. But Future X-Cops didn’t bring it. The fights were a throwback to the Power Rangers TV series. This can also be said about the movie’s special effects. Actually old Japanese monster movies were more entertaining than watching this one.
Future X-Cops is a very awful movie that you must not punish yourself with. Stay away from this one.
