The Proposal is a predictable romantic comedy that stars Sandra Bullock as Margaret, an editor-in-chief who is hated by her workers. Ryan Reynolds is her personal assistant Andrew. It turns out that Margaret is illegally living in the United States and will be deported back to Canada.
In the hopes of saving her career and avoid being deported, Margaret asked Andrew to marry her. And in an effort to prove that their supposed marriage is legitimate, they had to spend a weekend at Andrew’s hometown. And as any other romantic comedies, we know where The Proposal is leading to.
At first I had a hard time in believing that the tandem would work but their on-screen chemistry erased my doubts. Sandra Bullock as the boss from hell and Ryan Reynolds as the ambitious subordinate played their roles to perfection. The timing and the delivery of the lines were great, thus making The Proposal one of the most enjoyable movies made in 2009.
The supporting casts and the supposed Alaskan scenery added to the charm of The Proposal. The director and his crew did a good job with the location. Although it’s not really shot in Alaska, it has the Alaskan feel to it. The Golden Girls’ Betty White was adorable in this one.
Andrew Paxton (Ryan Reynolds): Three days ago, I loathed you. I used to dream about you getting hit by a cab. Then we had our little adventure up in Alaska and things started to changed. Things changed when we kissed. And when you told me about your tattoo. Even when you checked me out when we were naked. But I didn’t realize any of this, until I was standing alone… in a barn… wifeless. Now, you could imagine my disappointment when it suddenly dawned on me that the woman I love is about to be kicked out of the country. So Margaret, marry me, because I’d like to date you.
The Proposal might not be the most original romantic comedy around but you’ll be entertained watching it as I did. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds were engaging and there’s a part in me that wants to have a tyrant boss like Margaret someday.
