When someone told me Zhang Ziyi and Fan Bingbing are in a movie together, and I told myself that I had to see it even if it’s a Chinese chick flick. Zhang play’s the titular role in Sophie’s Revenge. When her boyfriend Jeff (Jisub So) dumped her for Joanna (Fan Bingbing), she set on a scheme to win him back. She asked Gorden (Peter Ho), Joanna’s friend, to help her.

Sophie’s Revenge felt like a hybrid of Hollywood’s Just My Luck (which I like) and the Filipino movie BFF (which I abhor). Sophie and Gorden were clumsy when they’re apart but seemed to have good fortunes when they’re together. The BFF connection is when the two girls became friends in a gym.
It was refreshing to see Zhang Ziyi playing a vulnerable female role. In Sophie’s Revenge, she got hurt and can’t do anything about it. Being an artist in the movie, she didn’t do any Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon stuff in this one. Sophie’s Revenge brought the softer side of Zhang and I liked it.
Fan Bingbing on the other hand was perfect as the fierce, glamorous actress. If I were Jeff, I would also leave Zhang Ziyi for her . I would even allow her nag me anytime. I do wish that someday two girls as pretty as Zhang and Fan would fight over me.

The plot thickens when it turned out that Gorden the photographer was not Joanna’s ex-lover but her brother. When Sophie learned about this, she got angry with Gorden and he left for Europe heartbroken. Then Sophie realized that she loves Gorden and in the hopes of bringing him back, she wrote a book about their love story. And he did come back in the end.
I usually don’t like sappy chick flicks but with two of the most beautiful Chinese actresses in it, Sophie’s Revenge kept me entertained from start to finish. There were times when I just stared at the screen, forgetting to read the subtitles. It’s one movie that both guys and girls would enjoy.
