The Rise of Cobra and the G.I. Joe

After being disappointed with Transformers 2, I was hoping that the G.I. Joe movie would be better.  I played with the action figures when I was just a kid and watched the animated series as well.  So you could just imagine how high my expectations are for this movie.

G.I Joe: The Rise of Cobra is action-packed from start to finish.  The action scenes are never-ending.  The movie featured characters that every fan are familiar with, such as Duke (Channing Tatum), General Hawk (Dennis Quaid), Breaker (Said Taghmaoui), Zartan (Arnold Vosloo), Destro (Christopher Eccleston) and Cobra Commander (Joseph Gordon-Levitt).  Ripcord (Marlon Wayans) provided the comedic relief.  I was surprised to see a cameo by Brendan Fraser in this one.

Then there’s Baroness (Sienna Miller) and Scarlett (Rachel Nichols), who were stunning and handled their roles quite well.  They could teach Megan Fox a thing or two with regards to being hot while acting at the same time.  Additional eye-candy is provided by Cover Girl (Karolina Kurkova).

But what I really want to see from The Rise of Cobra are the two ninjas, Snake Eyes (Ray Park) and Storm Shadow (Byung-hun Lee).  These are my two favorite G.I. Joe characters and their fight sequence was amazing.  Kudos to the fight director for a well choreographed fight scene.  I have to give props to the director for making Snake Eyes that awesome in the big screen.

The Baroness (Sienna Miller): Would you look at that? Real American heroes…

You might be wondering why it is entitled The Rise of Cobra when they failed in the end.  Well this movie looks like the start of a franchise.  It tells the story of how an arms dealer named McCullen becomes Destro and how Ana or Baroness’ brother became the Cobra Commander.  Good thing Baroness regained her memory or else Duke would have been one of Cobra’s minions.  One thing that Cobra succeeded is when Zartan became the US president.  It has an open-ending that is ideal foundation for a sequel in the future.

Is it better than the Transformers movie?  My answer’s definitely yes.  It managed to cram in the background of the major characters between all the fights and the chases.  Is G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra worth the wait?  Yes!  Yo Joe!
