Koreans make the best romantic comedies. Romantic Comedy or A Perfect Match was released in 2002 but I saw it recently. It was one of those nights when I’m bored and got nothing better to do. I thought Romantic Comedy might be like any other movie in the genre where boy meets girl and I was right.

The film centers on Hyo Jin (Sin Eun Kyeong) and the obstacles she had to face with regards to her work and personal life. The movie shows how she is a good friend and the perfect employee but still struggle in finding the man to complete her life.
Then she met Hyun Su (Jeoung Joon Ho), one of her clients, who is also struggling to find a match. On paper he is the guy girls want to marry: handsome, intelligent and has a steady job as a computer programmer. But he has a hard time looking for a girlfriend. I was a little bit surprised that he fell for the movie’s clumsy heroine. He has a hot ex-girlfriend who wants to hook up again yet he picked Hyo Jin. Oh well, it’s a romantic comedy after all.
Talking about movie clichés, Romantic Comedy poked fun on the genre. There was a scene where the characters discussed the things commonly portrayed in rom-coms. That had me laughing but not that much. I thought Romantic Comedy would be different from the rest of the movies in the genre. I thought the guy and the girl would not end up together because the movie was coming to an end and their relationship is still client-agent, although the guy is showing signs that he’s interested with her. But she’s too busy with her own life that she unintentionally overlooks these signs.
Romantic Comedy does have its funny moments and deserves to be watched once. Just don’t expect it to be special. It’s a random Asian movie that will make you stop channel surfing for a while and resume the remote bashing after 10 minutes into it. Viewing the movie for a second time might give you a serious headache. Just kidding.
